On that subject we have just finished our long term primitive technology course with the guys producing a very impressive range of pre Iron Age artefacts. We do use some metal tools on this course but their final project is to produce a craft item entirely using pre Iron Age tools.
When working with such tools deep in the forest it is inevitable that ones thoughts turn to the lives of our ancestors and the techniques and knowledge they possessed to make their lives possible. Throughout the process the greatest subject discussed was the time involved in producing even the most simple of items. We can make adjustments for a certain amount of unfamiliarity with the techniques and tools but craft does take much longer with primitive techniques than when using metal implements. That said I guess our ancestors had nothing to compare their work rate to and things just took as long as was necessary. A lesson I feel we could all benefit from. I think I speak for all on the course when I express the sensed of satisfaction in making not just the implements themselves but also all of the tools needed to complete the work, not something many of us experience in the modern world but one I feel should be explored much more frequently.
We had the opportunity to try different methods of production to gauge the times and it was quite interesting to discover that despite the method, nothing happened quickly. For example we hafted previously made stone axes by burning holes through the shaft and also by carving using flint burins. Both techniques took several hours, add to this time frame the making of the axe head, preparation of sinew or raw hide and the spruce glue and you have an item representing a huge investment in labour. Surely these implements must therefore have had great value and no doubt would have been highly prized and treasured. The one technique none of us tried was to burn through using a bow drill. I think this may well have been the method of choice.
White Dave update
Regular clients and friends will be pleased top know that white Dave is still well and thriving. I managed a rather special and idyllic stalk around the woods a few days ago and was rewarded by some very good views of tawny owls, roe deer and pipistrelle bats. I also managed to get very close to Dave’s house and witnessed him (I now know him to be a boar) and another sizable male shuffling dry bedding into their dens. I was able to watch for around 15 minutes before a sow arrived and began to circle behind me at which point I left before she could scent me. For me the real joy and skill in stalking is to watch the animal and then stalk out before they spot me, this way I know I have not disturbed them and hence my reason for leaving.
Heading back to camp I was treated to close views of another three badgers out feeding drawn by their unconcerned and unmistakable foraging noise. I could therefore adding six badger sightings to the evening’s list. The final sight of a heron heading home silhouetted against the falling sun completed a very special evening and one which cost nothing, yet will live in the memory for years to come and no doubt be replayed over and over during some of the less stimulating moments of my life.
Next trip
I am about to leave on our annual trip south to Devon and will soon be braving both the weather (which frankly looks rubbish) and the A303 which is consistent in its unpredictability. Hopefully I will have some interesting things to post upon my return from our travelling naturalist course and some fresh recipes for our wild food diary from our wild food course.

Out wandering a few days ago I saw the biggest roe buck I think I have ever seen, he was in excellent condition with haunches that a race horse would not have been ashamed of. His chestnut summer coat positively shone almost as though he had been groomed for the occasion. These animals will soon be getting very feisty and territorial and I have set myself the task of trying to photograph him once I discover his habits, if successful I will publish his image on this blog.
